Students attending WCU are required to show proof of valid medical insurance coverage or must enroll in the mandatory UNC System health plan.
Requirements are:
Students that are enrolled in distance education programs are not eligible for enrollment in the student health plan because they do not meet these requirements.
Each student that meets these requirements must take action regarding insurance coverage. If
you do not take action regarding waiver or enrollment, you will be automatically enrolled
in the UNC system health plan after the waiver process has ended. Students that wait
for the automatic enrollment process will have insurance coverage effective on August
1st (for Fall enrollees) and January 1st (for Spring enrollees) BUT may not receive an insurance card until mid-semester. Blue Cross Blue Shield
of NC will offer the Student Blue product again this year as the plan for the UNC
System.
New for 2024: Effective August 1, 2024, two plan options are available through StudentBlue,
a lower cost value plan or a Premium plan that has richer benefits. Students will
be automatically enrolled in the Value plan after the wavier period has concluded.
Any student that would prefer the Premium plan must manually enroll and choose the
Premium option. Note: The value plan will not satisfy insurance requirements for
a student travelling to the US with a J-1 Visa. Please refer to WCU Global Visa Informaiton for more details.
If you have other health insurance and would like to waive the mandatory UNC system
health plan, please visit the website below.

A student health fee is included as one of the fees students pay to the university as a mandatory fee. This fee entitles all current students, who are enrolled in at least six credit hours, to the services provided by the Health Services. Services, including procedures and testing that you may receive in Health Services based on your medical provider’s care plan may have additional fee. Payment is due at the time the services are rendered.
Health Services is a participating provider in several insurance plans and will file insurance claims to those in-network plans.
For out-of-network plans, Health Services will file courtesy claims on your behalf.
Health Services does not participate with either Medicare or Medicaid programs.
Health Services accepts check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover as payment. If you are unable to pay today, your charges will automatically be placed on your student account and payment for those services can be made at Student Services. Any medical expenses incurred outside of Health Services are the responsibility of the student.
